Birth
Brit Milah (Circumcision)
The ceremonial circumcision of a Jewish baby boy is the Jewish sign of accepting G-d's everlasting covenant.
The ceremony takes place during daytime on the eighth day after the boy's birth, even on a Shabbat, but is postponed if the circumcision would endanger the baby's life.
During the brit milah ceremony the baby is publicly given his name. It is customary to have guests at the ceremony and to follow it with a festive meal and a party. Some people hold the ceremony in a small family circle and hold a party at a later date.
Zeved HaBat (Gift of a Daughter)
A ceremony during which the baby girl's birth is publicly proclaimed and she is given a name. There is no prescribed date or age for this occasion, but it is usually held between three and thirty days after birth.
Pidyon HaBen (Redemption of the first-born boy)
During this ancient ceremony, the first-born son of a non-Levite/Cohenite is symbolically "redeemed" from compulsory dedication to service in the Temple.
If you weren't at the Brit Milah, this is your chance to bring a gift.
Suggested birth gifts:
Bar Mitzvah & Bat Mitzvah gifts
Bar Mitzvah (Obliged to the Commandments)
The ceremony of the Bar Mitzvah initiates a Jewish boy into religious adulthood, and is held when he turns thirteen.
First the boy is "called up" in the synagogue during service to recite the blessings connected with reading from the Torah, and, usually, also reads a portion from it.
The second part is a festive meal, where the new adult delivers a sermon or speech. Commonly a party follows.
The second part of the ceremony may follow the service immediately or be held several days later.
Suggested Bar Mitzvah gifts:
Bat Mitzvah (Obliged to the Commandments)
A Jewish girl's reaching the age of twelve is marked by any event between a family party and a complete adoption of a boy's Bar Mitzvah ceremony and party.
